Many nannies see themselves as an extension of the parent’s hopes and dreams for their children. The nanny's role is to fulfill those desires in a safe, enriching environment. Her duties consist of nursery clean up, bathing the children and all meal preparation. She will organize play dates, take the children to the park, doctor’s appointment, and any age-appropriate classes.
Many nannies are college educated or have taken child development classes. Developmentally, it is quite wonderful for a child to have their imagination stimulated through reading books and creative play. The nannies make learning fun and exciting. Arts and crafts, projects, holiday outings, planning birthday parties, buying presents and/or clothing for the child can all be part of the nanny's responsibilities. Some nannies may have musical, artistic or athletic talents that they bring to the job. Depending on the age of the child, developing motor coordination through exercise and active play is also part of the nanny's job.
Most live-out nannies work an 8-10 hour day. The live-out nannies all drive and have their own cars. It is recommended that a car be provided for use on the job. Most nannies will travel with the family, depending on the length of time and the situation in their personal life.
Depending on what you are looking for in a nanny will determine the type of person you will interview. You may be more interested in a college-educated, American nanny or an English-speaking nanny who is fluent in another language. They both have very different experiences to bring to your baby. Background, education, age, and years of experience as a nanny may vary, but in all cases, the references will be excellent.
